Mahaguthi Craft with Conscience is a fair trade organization which produces, markets and exports handmade Nepalese crafts on behalf of more than 1,000 artisans. About half of them are from remote and mountainous areas of Nepal. Most of its artisans are women, and they are offered a chance to use traditional skills to make these products at home. This provides the family with some extra income.
Fair trade organizations like Mahaguthi are involved in more than just marketing and selling artisan products. Mahaguthi also devotes about 40 percent of its income to provide its artisans and their children training, food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and education.
The artisans produce handicrafts made from woven cloth, like decorative pillows, towels, prayer flags, aprons, handbags, and draw pouches. They also make mugs and other items. The parent organization of Mahaguthi Craft with Conscience dates back to 1926 then the founder had worked with Mahatma Gandhi. He came back after being exiled in India to teach women, especially poor women, how to be self-reliant. They were taught how to weave cotton and fabric.
The mission continues today by providing a source of income and other social supports to disadvantaged people in Nepal. When you purchase their products, you are empowering these people and helping them be self-reliant.
