Prokritee is a fair trade organization in Bangladesh that works with more than 1,500 artisans in rural areas. The beginning of Prokritee (which means “nature”) dates back to 1977, when the Mennonite Central Committee set up several projects around the country. Prokritee was endowed by the MCC in 2001 to oversee and manage eight job-creation projects independently.
Artisans who work with Prokritee use use renewable resources, like recycled sari, waste jute, silk, handmade paper, natural fibers, and leaves. The products are developed by Prokritee designers and brought to life by the artisans. They are sold in Bangladesh and marketed around the world.
The values of the organization have roots in the MCC, and they include compassion, justice, and non-violence. Prokritee focuses on helping disadvantage women, regardless of caste or creed, become contributing members of society by providing a sustainable way to earn an income. Many of the women are widows, single mothers, or heads-of-household with little or no income.
When you purchase from Prokritee, you are helping to improve the standard of living for disadvantaged women in the poorest parts of Bangladesh, and you are helping to fund education for their children.
